Oakwood Drive, Burlington, ON — A contemporary home that became a landmark
In Roseland, one of South Burlington's most established and traditional neighbourhoods, our client at 384 Oakwood Drive wanted a home that made a clear, confident contemporary statement. The home that resulted genuinely became a landmark in its neighbourhood, a design that was very successfully executed and now anchors its streetscape. The design challenge was introducing a confident contemporary home into a settled, traditional context without it feeling foreign to the surroundings. Our response was clean contemporary architecture built on strong, well-composed forms and quality execution.
The Client's Vision
Every contemporary home placed in a traditional neighbourhood carries real risk. For our client, the ambition was worth that risk.
Our client wanted a home that made a clear contemporary statement, distinctive and modern, but still a comfortable, livable family residence rather than a showpiece for its own sake. The ambition was never to shock the street.
Our role was to bring something genuinely fresh to a settled neighbourhood while keeping the home functional and comfortable for daily family life. That balance required real architectural discipline, since a contemporary home in a setting this established has nowhere to hide if the design is not resolved.

Architectural Character and Experience
384 Oakwood Drive is now widely recognized in its neighbourhood as a landmark—a contemporary home whose strong, well-composed forms read as fresh against Roseland's older housing stock. It does not feel disruptive; instead, it feels resolved and thoughtfully integrated into its surroundings.
The home represents the successful execution of a bold design vision, supported by disciplined detailing throughout the project. Rather than simply attracting attention, it has earned respect over time and has become a point of identity for the neighbourhood.
By elevating the character of the street it occupies, 384 Oakwood Drive demonstrates how contemporary architecture can enhance an established community while remaining sensitive to its context.
Process, Budget, Approvals, and Delivery
A landmark home still depends on disciplined, well-managed delivery.
Completed in 2016 on a $950,000 budget, with a gross floor area of 3,800 square feet, the project was delivered as a fully managed custom home, with our role covering architecture and master planning.
This balance mattered throughout the project. Our client wanted a clear contemporary statement, but the home also needed to function comfortably as a livable family residence.
By keeping the architectural concept and the construction process aligned from the start, the design's confidence was preserved without sacrificing buildability.
Outcome and Impact
384 Oakwood Drive achieves what our client set out to create.
The home is a clear example of how a contemporary custom home, executed with care, can become the most memorable house on the block. For our client, it achieved more than a contemporary statement.
Most importantly, the project shows the value of disciplined execution in a sensitive setting. The home does not feel foreign to Roseland. It feels like it's a landmark.
